Summer vacation is what you make of it. It can be relaxing and completely free of responsibility, or it can be used to springboard your career and gain the business and leadership skills needed to make an immediate impact in the working world. An innovative program offered through the UCLA Anderson School of Management is quickly becoming recognized as a catalyst for student success. This program is gearing up to admit participants for the 2015 session, ready to change their summer from quiet and uneventful into a transformational experience.
The UCLA Anderson EDGE Summer program is a life-changing experience open to college juniors, seniors and recent graduates. This three-week program brings together world-renowned Anderson business faculty, talented guest speakers from the Los Angeles area, and up-and-coming students from a wide variety of academic disciplines and universities in an effort to prepare students for a place in business. Designed to ensure that participants understand the fundamentals of Business, Leadership, and Communications, EDGE is where the leaders of tomorrow understand opportunity in business today.
Many undergraduate students have the creativity to produce outstanding ideas, but need the training and the business understanding to know how to turn the ideas into opportunities, businesses and careers. The EDGE cohort participates in a rigorous full-time schedule of lectures, case studies, team building activities and group projects, all focused on developing a holistic perspective on management, leadership and education. Sessions include all of the business fundamental topics critical to understanding the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous business world.
EDGE alumni have gone on to secure internships, create new businesses, expand existing businesses, and be employed in a wide variety of industries. EDGE Alumni are currently employed at FOX Sports; Deloitte; Lennox Industries; Revolution Prep; United Way of Greater Los Angeles; Mitsubishi, UFJ Financial Group, Inc.; Target; and the Executive Office of the President of the United States. EDGE Alumni have also started new businesses such as CharmRoom.com and Koala Tapioca. Student success after completing the EDGE program only demonstrates the validity and applicability of the program. But one of the most inspirational stories comes from recent EDGE Alumni Kongping Han.
Kongping completed the EDGE program during the summer of 2014. A January 2014 Business Economics graduate, Kongping did not know what she wanted to do after graduation, only knowing that she needed to improve her public speaking and leadership skills. She discovered EDGE while visiting the Anderson website, and soon realized the program offered the leadership development and self-reflection skills she needed to learn. EDGE not only “helped me regain my confidence, but it provided me with numerous opportunities after the program ended,” said Kongping. Kongping interned with the Executive Education department after completing EDGE, and then continued on to work at Innovation Protocol and became a lead organizer of the 3-Day Startup Program at UCLA. She credits the EDGE program as the critical step which allowed her the confidence to pursue her career path after graduation.
“I chose to attend EDGE because I respect the talent that Anderson helps to develop. I like the idea of ‘thinking in the next’ and wanted to understand what business is at its core,” says Tristin Hagen (UCLA BA Communications 2015).
If your student is nearing graduation but still unsure of where there next steps should be, EDGE may be experience they need to catapult them into their future. Applications are being accepted for the 2015 EDGE Summer Program, with the next round of applications due March 15th, 2015.
