On Saturday, January 31st, 2015 over 1,000 UCLA parents gathered in 59 locations across the globe to participate in the sixth annual Coffee Social Day. The Office of Parent & Family Programs  (PFP) facilitated a successful 6th Annual Parent & Family Coffee Socials on Saturday, January 31st 2015.  This year we had a record breaking 59 locations across the globe! The Office of Parent & Family Programs (PFP) facilitated a successful 6th Annual Parent & Family Coffee Socials on Saturday, January 31st 2015. This year we had a record breaking 59 locations across the globe! For those of you who did not have a chance to participate, Coffee Socials are small, informal gatherings held at neighborhood coffee shops and hosted by a current UCLA parent or family member.

The event began in 2010 when several parents approached the PFP staff with the idea that they wanted to gather with other current parents in their community and celebrate being a proud Bruin parent. Believing this would be a great way to perpetuate engagement, PFP staff worked with hosts to figure out the details of the event and Coffee Socials were ‘born’ with just four locations in California and approximately 35 participants at the first event.

Since the inaugural event, the program has grown exponentially with over 1,000 guests registered across 35 in-state, 16 out-of-state, and 8 international locations for the 2015 event. As UCLA’s out-of-state and international student numbers have continued to rise (along with the price of gas), the PFP office recognizes that parents and families may not always be able to make the journey to campus, but still have an interest in engaging with the UCLA community. This reality has prompted the office to further expand upon the program and establish the event as an annual occurrence early in the Winter Quarter. Coffee Socials allows Parent and Family Programs to bring UCLA to communities across the globe. Providing an opportunity for parents to foster connections with one another on a regional level, while also receiving important information from various campus partners.

Here is what participants had to say about the event:

“This was the 3rd Coffee Social that I’ve hosted.  I love this event, because it allows busy parents to meet in an informal setting close to home.  I’ve made some good friends while connecting at over a Coffee Social… Having the wealth of information to hand out was also great.  Many of our parents took goodies and pamphlets home with them.”

“Sharing parents view with dealing and coping with the separation from the student…[is] great to know that a connection was made with parents on a personal basis. Great host in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.”

“Everyone I spoke with was excited to meet other parents and share information about UCLA and their student’s experiences.”

“Looking forward to next year & other events!”
