Promoting A Positive Body Attitude
SHEP Presents: I love my body because…
Research has shown that college students (i.e. those between 18-21 years of age, though not exclusively) can be particularly susceptible to body image concerns or issues*. To address this, UCLA Student Health Education & Promotion (SHEP) works to promote positive body attitudes through initiatives such as their annual Be You Festival. Be You aims to celebrate body positivity and health at any size. In conjunction with International No Diet Day on May 6, Be You strives to abolish health myths spread by today’s fad dieting culture and instead, focus on holistic health and well-being. Through a series of online social media posts and workshops, students are encouraged to pursue a healthier and more realistic relationship with their bodies in a way that feels good to them without the role of body or size standards pushed out by mainstream media.
SHEP encourages Bruin families to practice a body-positive mindset, too! Starting your body-positive journey is simple. You can start by answering the following question with your student- “Why do you love your body?” Gain some inspiration from the video above of SHEP staff sharing why they love their body!
